A photographer’s site doesn’t only need to look classy and modern, it also needs a number of features unique to that niche. A complex background, for example, would more often than not just take away from the photos on display, and image sizes will for the most part need to be larger than those on, say, a news site.
WordPress is popular among photographers for it’s easy-to-use interface and sheer abundance of awesome themes, but of course it’s knowing where to look that’s the key. Here are 10 of the best photography themes released in recent months, in no particular order.
1. PHOTOME
A simple, minimalistic theme that’s really all about the images, this theme is not packed with all manner of functionality in an effort to be flexible for other kinds of site. It’s for photography, plain and simple, and it looks fantastic.
2. Big Picture
Created to make an impact, and it certainly does. Big Picture lets your images speak for themselves, and control the entire look of the site. Multiple page templates let you tweak the layout to suit you perfectly, and just try resizing your browser to see what happens to the background image.
3. Widescreen
The concept is similar to Big Picture, though inner pages use a plain background.
4. Giga Gallery
More of a gallery-style layout, this is perfect for showing off a lot of work all at once. Images load as you scroll down the page, saving on page load times, which is a lovely touch.
5. Photobox
Another simple slideshow layout, with emphasis on the images.
6. Photo Workshop
This theme has a number of subtle cool features, such as the ability to turn captions and thumbnails on and off while browsing. As an added bonus, it also caters for those running workshops/events, or with specific products to advertise, as well as being suitable for the individual photographer’s portfolio.
7. FolioFlip
This theme could really be used to showcase just about anything, but it’s included here because “just about anything” includes photography and the flip feature is pretty unique! An excellent way to give the user information about your images without losing the simple, streamlined look.
8. WordPress Chameleon
Very simple and functional. Showcases featured images on the homepage and displays a tidy gallery layout on inner pages.
9. Shiny
This is one seriously awesome theme. It could be used for a number of other purposes, but take one look at that portfolio layout and you’ll see why this would make a great photography site.
10. Locus One Page
A basic gallery-layout with a twist, and various style options to change the look of the site with very little effort. Excellent understated theme.
